Nicholas Walters lands a right against now former Featherweight Champion, Nonito Donaire.
Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin, and new WBA Featherweight Champion Nicholas Walters both scored knockout victories on Satudary, Ocotober 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Golovkin stopped Marco Antonio Rubio early on in the fight, in just the 2nd round to retain his WBA belt, while Walters scored a vicious 6th round KO to remain undefeated, and take the WBA Featherweight title belt away from Nonito Donaire.
Both fighters were betting favorites to win the fight according to most Las Vegas sportsbooks, but Walters had a considerably tougher opponent, having to dethrone the former champ Nonito Donaire. Walters was stunned during the fight early on, but he also hurt Donaire multiple times, and Donaire had severe swelling of his right eye, and his left eye began to swell before Walters floored him in the 6th round with a huge overhand right. Donaire was unable to get up before the 10 count, and was brutally honest in a post-fight interview saying "He's amazing, he beat the s--- out of me."
Golovkin would have it a bit easier Saturday night as he cruised to a 2nd round KO. Golovkin dominated the first round of the fight, and in the 2nd round he hurt Rubio with a right uppercut, and then dropped him with an overhand left. Rubio returned to his feet but did not beat the 10 count, which some considered a quick count by veteran referee Jack Reiss. Nonetheless, it appeared Golovkin would have stopped the fight sooner rather than later had it continued anyway. This was a good weekend of Boxing, and hopefully the year will close out with some strong cards.
